The Power of Perception: Seeing Is Believing

Updated: May 28

By Lori Marie

Ever heard the phrase, ‘Seeing is believing’? It’s more profound than you might think. This saying usually implies that if you witness something firsthand, it’s real. But some people demand scientific proof, even for the extraordinary, because it’s so hard to believe.

Recent breakthroughs in quantum physics have added a new twist to this old adage. Scientists have discovered that particles can exist in multiple states at once, and it’s only when we observe or ‘see’ them that they settle into a single state. This finding reinforces the idea that ‘seeing is believing’ and underscores the importance of perspective.

Imagine watching a ball bounce from the top of a building. Now picture someone else watching the same ball bounce from the street. Both of you would have different perceptions of the event. When you share your experiences, you’ll interpret the event differently, but neither of you is wrong. This is the beauty of perspective.

Our perspectives are shaped by our experiences. If we witness something ourselves, we form our own perspective. If we learn from others, we see their perspective through our own lens.

Stephen R. Covey once said, ‘To change ourselves effectively, we first had to change our perceptions.’ This is the key to changing the world. By altering our perspective, we change our beliefs and, in turn, our reality.

The journey to change our perception begins within us. It requires quiet introspection and reflection on our life experiences. As we understand the origins of our perceptions, we gain self-awareness. On Saturday morning cartoons I’d watch the Superfriends’ and they taught me the saying ‘Knowing is half the battle.’ Self-awareness is the first step towards changing our perceptions and transforming our world.

If you seek happiness, joy, and abundance in your life, ask yourself what perceptions are holding you back. Journal your thoughts and feelings. You may not find a clear answer immediately, but the act of understanding your perception is half the battle. The next step is to be mindful of when these perceptions arise and consciously change how you see things.

Remember, the power to change lies within you. If you believe in yourself, then seeing truly is believing!
